Description
IIHS (Insurance institute for highway safety) is a nonprofitable independent research lab of car safety. Since 1959, IIHS has been trying to get auto makers to build safer models like airbags and lap and shoulder belts. Since 1995 IIHS started a Moderate Overlap Test which 40 percent of the car is rammed into a barrier made of aluminum honeycomb which was designed to crush like a car. The ratings were Good, Acceptable, Marginal, and Poor. Examples back in the 90s were goods like the Ford Taurus and the Mercedes Benz M-Class. Acceptables like the Land rover discovery and the Lincoln Continental. Marginals like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 extended cab and the Jeep grand cherokee. Poors like the Kia Sephia/Spectra and the Chevy Blazer. The Side crash test began in 2003 to represent a t-bone collision. The Small over lap test came out in 2010 and The passenger side came out in 2017. The updated side test and updated moderate overlap test are tougher for automakers to pass to this day.
