Description
The Alaska State Militia was founded in 1974 by veterans of the Vietnam War as an exercise of the second amendment right to bear arms, and operate a well-regulated militia. The Alaska State Militia is organized around the principles of self-reliance, preparedness, and community service. The Alaska State Militia was officialized as a state service by the State Governor of Alaska following increased tensions in the Cold War and state senate supportive majority. This granted the militia state funding and surplus military equipment previously used by the Alaska National Guard to expand operational capabilities. Since the Soviet invasion of Alaska in 1985, the Alaska State Militia had been activated by the State Governor of Alaska to assist the Alaska National Guard and U.S. Army forces in the defense of key Alaskan municipalities.
