Description
The Ninth Coast Guard District, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, was the service’s primary operational command responsible for the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Covering more than 6,700 miles of shoreline and some of the busiest inland shipping waters in the world, District 9 oversaw missions critical to maritime safety, winter navigation, and national security throughout the 1970s. During this era, the district managed a diverse fleet of cutters ranging from large icebreakers—like the legendary USCGC Mackinaw (WAGB-83)—to buoy tenders, harbor tugs, and small patrol craft. Its forces maintained aids to navigation, enforced maritime law, conducted environmental protection operations, and responded to search-and-rescue cases across all five Great Lakes. The district was especially known for its intensive winter icebreaking program, essential for supporting America’s industrial supply chain of iron ore, coal, and steel.
