Description
Created on Jan 1861 on the model of Zuavi’s corps of the French army, it was made up of volunteers, mostly French, Belgian and Dutch, who came to the state to defend it against military attacks by the Kingdom of Italy which pressed for the capture of Roma order to complete the unification of Italy. Its history is identified with the last decade of the life of the State of the Church (1860-1870). The regiment was dismissed on Sept 1870, after the capture of Rome.
