Régiment de Marine #14227548
Description
The Regiment de la Marine was created in 1636 but can be traced back to 1622, when Cardinal-Duc de Richelieu created the Compagnies Ordinaires de la Mer of which there 100 of. These were small units of a few men used for naval service, recruiting in the port cities of Le Havre, Bordeaux, Bayonne, and Nantes as well as other port cities. The remaining companies would be collected and used to form a regular regiment of the French Army on September 26th, 1635. This was done when the Cardinal-Duc persuaded Louis XIII to integrate it into his regular units. The regiment initially counted 18 companies and was known as Cardinal-Duc, again recruiting in port cities. Then in 1636, the regiment would be renamed to Regiment de la Marine. In 1642 the regiment was reinforced by incorporation of Guillaume Delort de Sérignan's Regiment, which was raised on March 20th, 1635 in Montagnac. On September 26th, 1635, the colonel was Louis de Monteclerc Knight of Montecler who led the regiment
