Description
The Grand Duchy of Würzburg was granted to the former Elector of Salzburg and earlier Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Ferdinand III von Habsburg-Lothringen. The territories were initially mediatized from the ecclesiastical Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss following the framework established by the Treaty of Lunéville (1801), being annexed to the Electorate of Bavaria before being exchanged to Ferdinand as an Electorate in 1805 for the Bavarian annexation of Austrian Tirol. In 1806, with the disbandment of the Holy Roman Empire, the Electorate was elevated to a Grand Duchy. As a member of the Confederation of the Rhine, the ruling duke was subordinated to Napoleon's demands, contributing to the coalition until being overrun by Bavarian troops in 1814. The state was annexed as part of the ensuing treaty, and Ferdinand III was restored to Tuscany after the Congress of Vienna.
