The United States Army Air Corps was the Army’s air arm before and during the early part of World War II. In June 1941, it was reorganized into the Army Air Forces, which became the main U.S. air combat force in WWII. The Air Corps and its successor rapidly expanded from about 26,500 personnel and 2,200 aircraft in 1939 to over 2.2 million personnel and nearly 64,000 aircraft by 1945.
