About Al Bowlly ↓ Albert Allick Bowlly was born on January 7th, 1899 in Portuguese, East Africa (now known as Mozambique). Al Bowlly started his career as a rhythm banjo player in a small band in 1922, led by a man named Edgar who was the most popular South African band leader of the 1920s. Al joined another band 3 years later in India, where him and the band recorded the first record that featured Al Bowlly (on banjo, not vocals) 2 years later in the summer of 1927, Edgar and Al met up in Germany, where they recorded Al Bowlly's first solo record known as "Blue Skies". Al's career took a huge turn from being a small part of a band to a star with millions of fans, even topping the charts as the 2nd most popular singer in America, putting his biggest rival, Bing Crospy, in 3rd place!
