Florida Highway Patrol - Headquarters #145921916
Description
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) was created in 1939 to improve highway safety in Florida. Before FHP, traffic laws were enforced inconsistently and crashes were increasing. Under Governor Fred P. Cone, about 45 officers formed the first patrol. Early troopers focused on traffic enforcement using limited equipment. As Florida’s population grew, FHP expanded and improved training and standards. New tools like radar and radios enhanced enforcement in the 1960s. FHP later added specialized units and modern equipment. Today, it operates under the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, focusing on highway safety and crash investigation.
