𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 In 1862 Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza founded the Army Sanitary Officers Corps and the General Directorate of the Romanian Sanitary Service during the reformation of the Royal Romanian Army. The main purpose of this service was set up to ensure the maintenance of the health of the Royal Romanian Army. The Sanitary Service had strong ties with the International Red Cross Organization and the Romanian Sanitary Service worked on the front lines. Due to it having a strong connection to the Red Cross it was a non-combatant organization. During the Second World War most frontline medical staff had to carry bolt-action rifles on the Eastern Front, due to Russia's violations against the articles of the Geneva Convention.
