Description
Estonia had been occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940 and incorporated into the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic. However, as the tide of the war began to turn against the Germans, Estonia saw an opportunity to reclaim its independence. The Estonian National Committee, a nationalist movement led by political and military figures who had escaped Soviet occupation or were released from prisons, emerged with the aim of establishing a self-governing Estonia. In 1944, as German forces retreated from the Baltic region, the ENC seized the opportunity to assert its authority and restore Estonian independence. The ENC's provisional government worked diligently to regain control over Estonian territory and reinstate national institutions.
