Description
The Cascadia Highway Patrol (CHP) was established in 1931 in response to the rapid expansion of the state’s roadway network and the rising number of motor vehicle incidents across rural counties. Initially formed with a small fleet of motorcycles and fewer than fifty officers, the agency focused on enforcing traffic laws, assisting stranded motorists, and supporting local sheriffs in remote areas. Throughout the mid-20th century, the CHP expanded its responsibilities to include commercial vehicle regulation, accident investigation, and statewide emergency response. Modernization in the 1970s and 1990s introduced advanced radio systems, aerial patrol units, and specialized divisions dedicated to DUI enforcement and highway safety education. Today, the Cascadia Highway Patrol serves as the state’s primary traffic enforcement and roadway safety agency, maintaining a visible presence across Cascadia’s major highways and providing critical support during natural disasters, major incidents
