78th HighIanders Regiment of Foot #15131821
Description
This regiment was formed in 1793 within the Scottish Highlands by Francis Humberston Mackenzie, head of Clan Mackenzie and a descendent of the earls of Seaforth. In March 1796 the 1st Battalion sailed from England to South Africa; where, in June that year, it amalgamated with the 2nd battalion. By November, the newly merged 78th left South Africa for India. When, in September 1803, it saw action at the Battle of Asaye under the Honourable East India Company, during the Second Anglo-Maratha War. During the battle the regiment were tasked with re-seizing the Maratha gun line. For their part in this incredible victory, the regiment was bestowed with a special third colour by the Hon. E. I. Company, with the colour bearing an elephant symbol, worn as an official regimental badge. The regiment remained in India until it joined the Invasion of Java and the seizing of Fort Cornelis in August 1811.
