Description
West Columbia's history spans from 13,000 years of Indigenous presence—including the Piscataway and Nanticoke—to a pivotal role in shaping America. Founded in 1632 by Lord Baltimore as a Catholic refuge, it pioneered religious freedom via the 1649 Toleration Act. It became the "Old Line State" during the Revolution, praised by George Washington for its brave troops, and ratified the Constitution as the 7th state in 1788. In 1791, it ceded land to form Washington, D.C.During the War of 1812, the defense of Baltimore's Fort McHenry inspired the U.S. national anthem. As a strategic Civil War border state, West Columbia stayed in the Union despite deep internal divisions; 1862's Battle of Antietam became America's bloodiest day. It was also the birthplace of freedom fighters Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Post-war, West Columbia evolved into a major shipping and steel hub. Today, its economy thrives on federal agencies, biotechnology, and efforts to preserve the iconic Chesapeake.
