Description
The Kuban People's Republic was a Cossack state in the former borders of the Russian Empire's Kuban Oblast that existed for several months in 1918, although the country's Rada (parliament) had existed since 1917. The country's capital was in the city of Yekaterinodar, and the most commonly spoken language was Ukrainian/Ruthenian. The country sought union with the Ukrainian People's Republic, however it collapsed before it could do so, and was overtaken first by the Whites and later the Bolsheviks. The government continued to exist in exile, and in 1919, a year after the Republic had collapsed, the flag and coat of arms were officially adopted by the Rada. The colors of the flag represent the Cossacks in purple, which was chosen as the color because of the Kuban's unofficial Ukrainian nickname, the "Malynovyj Klyn". The purple segment was made dominant to symbolize the Cossack majority, while the green symbolized Circassians/Adyghe, and the blue represented all other minorities.
