Description
The Don Republic (later known as the Almighty Don Host) was a Cossack state that existed from 1918-1920 in the areas of the former Don Host Oblast of the Russian Empire. The Republic effectively served as a nation state of the Don Cossack people until it's liquidation by the Bolsheviks in 1920. The Don Republic's capital was in Novotcherkassk, a significant historical and cultural city for the Don Cossacks, and had 3 official languages; Ukrainian/Ruthenian, Russian, and Don Gutor (the Don Cossacks' own language). The colors on the Don Cossack flag (made by Ataman Pyotr Krasnov in 1918) represented the various peoples of the Host, with the blue representing the Cossack people, the yellow representing the Kalmyk people, who had lived alongside Don Cossacks for centuries and often served in Don Cossack regiments, and lastly the red, which represented Ukrainians/Ruthenians (who made up around 30%~ of the Don Host's population), as well as other ethnic minorities that inhabited the region.
