Description

The King's Guards were a select group of soldiers responsible for the protection and defense of the reigning monarch of Greece. They were established in 1868 during the reign of King George I, and were officially called the Royal Hellenic Guards. The King's Guards were drawn from the best soldiers in the Greek army and were required to pass a series of rigorous tests and examinations before being accepted. They were highly trained and equipped with the most advanced weaponry available at that time. The King's Guards were responsible for the safekeeping of the royal family and its residences, as well as for providing security at important state ceremonies and events. They also served as an elite ceremonial unit, responsible for escorting the king during public appearances and participating in parades and other events. The unit consisted of three companies: the Evzone Guards (elite infantrymen known for their distinctive white kilts and pom-poms), the Cavalry Guards (mounted soldiers)
