Description

The concept behind the SAS was first developed by Colonel ##### ######### Serving in North Africa in the early days of the war, Stirling had observed the British trying to use commando tactics by deploying thousands of men at once. But this proved problematic since the enemy was able to learn about the raids in advance. Stirling instead argued for creating a force of around 200 men who could launch covert attacks against high-value targets such as ships and airfields. Working in units of four or five men, they would have the flexibility and stealth to achieve what larger forces couldn’t.
