Description
The House of Råttnar, House Råttnar, the House of Ratnar, or House Ratnar, is a house that originated from a small Norse-founded hamlet in Northumbria, its original location unclear. The rat in a heraldry crest can symbolize industriousness, cunningness, versatility, and modesty. However, it is likely that none of these symbolisms are responsible for its selection. Instead, it is speculated that its origins come from their dismissal from affluent noble houses. A translated letter from a ruler of Durham cites, "These rats by way of river feign prosperity and are a brood of rodents by a name most befitting." It is suggested that having misunderstood multiple other messages calling them rats, the illiterate hamlet began spelling Ratnar as Rottanar (in association with the animal), and later Råttnar. After being forced out of Northumbrian politics, the clan dispersed across Europe, Britain & Ireland, Scandinavia, and North America, keeping ties as faux noble dynasty of minimal wealth.
