(NOW THE GRENADIER GUARDS) The Grenadier Guards are one of the most prestigious regiments of The British Army. Formed in 1656, it has been a Guard regiment since it had formed under Charles II. A regiment which has a proud history of service to the sovereign in times of war and peace – be it on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan or guarding the royal palaces such as Buckingham Palace and St James' Palace. They have received battle awards in wars such as: the War of the Spanish Succession, (1701–1714) including Oudenarde the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748) the Napoleonic Wars, including the Peninsular War (1808–1814) and the Battle of Waterloo (1815) the Crimean War (1854–1855) the Egyptian War (1882) the Sudan Campaigns of 1885 and 1898 the Second Boer War (1889–1902) the First World War (Western Front) (1914–1918) the Second World War (North Africa, Italy, Northwest Europe) (1939–1945) the Persian Gulf War (1990–1991) 'Once a Grenadier, Always a Grenadier.'
