|SPQR| Legio V Alaudae #15638988
Description
The Legio V Alauda, also known as V Gallica or simply V, was a Roman legion, created by Julius Caesar in 52 BC, composed of transalpine Gauls. The nickname Alauda derives from the high crest, typical of the Galli warriors, which decorated the helmets of the legionaries. Itself a loan from the language of the Gauls. The V Alauda of Caesar was the first Roman legion made up of provincials, enrolled among the Gauls. Initially Caesar paid the legionaries with his money, but the legion was later recognized by the Senate. Before being transferred to Spain, the V Alauda participated in the Gallic wars until 49 BC, proving to be one of the bravest legions of Caesar. It is said, in fact, that during the battle of Tapso in 46 BC, after having rejected with great courage a charge of large African elephants, was given as a symbol to it.
