Description
The The Astor family was the most powerful old-money dynasty of New York City’s Fifth Avenue society. Headed by Mr. William Backhouse Astor Jr. and the formidable Mrs. Caroline Schermerhorn Astor, the family ruled Gilded Age wealth and refinement. Mr. Astor was born into New York privilege. Descended from a successful mercantile lineage, he inherited a colossal fortune rooted in the early fur trade and massive city real estate holdings, making the Astor name synonymous with American royalty. Mrs. Astor—born into the ultra-elite Knickerbocker aristocracy—was revered as the supreme gatekeeper of high society. Known simply as "The Mrs. Astor," her approval was mandatory to enter their exclusive world. Together, they raised five children: Emily, Helen, Charlotte, Caroline, and John Jacob IV, all bred under strict social standards.TIMELINE: 1880s
