Description
The 53rd Rifles Regiment traces its origins to the Civil War, when it served as a regular unit of the Union Army, primarily made up of first-generation Americans. Following the triumph over the Confederate States, the 53rd were stationed as a security force within the state of Kentucky, where it subsequently become more readily staffed by residents of the state and was subsequently assimilated into the Arkansas National Guard. The 53rd was temporarily deactivated in 1894, but was re-established as a glider unit in 1941 to fight in World War 2. The unit has remained active since, however now focuses its efforts on air assault and light infantry operations, working closely with the 63rd Aviation Brigade.
