Description
The 709th Static Infantry Division was a coastal defence unit tasked with protecting the Norman French Peninsula's eastern and northern coasts. This included the Utah Beachhead and the United States' airborne landing zones. Its sector stretched over 250 kilometres, from the northeast of Carentan to the west via Barfleur, Cherbourg, and Cap de la Hague. The Division included a number of "Ostlegionen" - eastern - units of various nationalities, primarily from occupied eastern European countries.
