Description
In the medieval period before the creation of more famous papal bodyguard units, earlier popes as well as heads of a parish would have small cavalry guards. The biggest cavalry guard belonging to a pope had 30 to 40 men with others being smaller while heads of a parish had guards numbering 4 to 10 men being led by a marshal. The men in such guard units were likely knights, both feudal (men from the lands of the papal states) and mercenary (which were Tuscans, Lombards, Romagnols, and Frenchmen by the 13th century) in nature.
