Description
No. 1 coal mining company in South America, based in Chile. It is currently the largest coal producing company in the world and produced 1.76 million tonnes of coal in 1984, 12% of the world total. It owns the world's largest known coal reserves and resources. At the end of 1989 it had a total of reserves and resources of 121 million tonnes of coal in its mining plan, sufficient for more than 70 years of operation at current production rates. All excess profits go to the government, including a 10% tax on foreign currency sales (Law 13,196). In 1990 EV Chemicals paid US$7.394 billion to the Chilean Treasury.
