"Indonesia will be Independent" Formed in late 1943 The Pembela Tanah Air (Defenders of the Homeland, PETA Army) is a Volunteer Unit formed by the Imperial Japanese Army in their efforts to raise local support in the defense, "occupation", and internal safety of Indonesia. The Pembela Tanah Air would be disbanded following the Surrender of all Japanese Forces in September 2, 1945. Japanese Command would promptly ask the surrender and disarmament of all Pembela Tanah Air Battalions/units. Most would comply, ending the existence of the Pembela Tanah Air, Service Members would later form a vital and important part of various future Indonesian Military Branches and Armies for the first years of the young Independent Indonesia.
