Description
While a man could be trained to fire in ranks and march to the sound of a drum, the United Irishmen recognised the importance of enlisting men with more skill in musketry. They thus turned to the hunters and trappers of Irish society to form an elite body of light infantry whose sole purpose was to cause as much havoc in the British ranks as possible. Ulster proved the most valuable province to find such men, with many only freshly returning from service overseas in the British Army or hunting expeditions to the newly independent American frontiers.
