Cosa Nostra, meaning "our thing" in Italian, is a Sicilian criminal organization with roots tracing back to the mid-19th century. Initially emerging as a form of local protection and control, it evolved into a powerful criminal network with influence in politics, construction, and finance, later expanding into drug trafficking and money laundering. The American Mafia, also known as La Cosa Nostra, is a direct descendant of the Sicilian Mafia.
