🌿In June of 1914 Total WAR broke out in all of Europe. For years before the war, European countries were caught up in nationalism, militarism, imperial competition, and tight alliances. Nations were proud and defensive, building huge armies and navies, competing for colonies, and promising to back each other up if trouble started. All of that made Europe feel like a loaded spring. The immediate trigger came on June 28, 1914, when Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was assassinated in Sarajevo. The assassin was connected to nationalist groups that wanted Serbia to gain more independence and influence. Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia and declared war. That’s when the alliance system kicked in like falling dominoes 🌿
