Description
After the Act of Mediation in 1803, Switzerland became a confederation of 19 autonomous cantons, restored by Napoleon Bonaparte after the collapse of the Helvetic Republic. While officially neutral and independent, Switzerland was effectively a French client state—Napoleon acted as its Mediator and influenced its politics and military. The cantons regained self-rule, but French troops could pass through, and Swiss soldiers served in Napoleon’s armies. This system lasted until 1813, when Napoleon’s defeat led to the collapse of French control and a return to Swiss independence, formalized in 1815 at the Congress of Vienna.
