Description
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument dedicated to unidentified or unidentifiable soldiers who died in war. These tombs symbolize the sacrifices of soldiers whose remains were never identified, serving as a place of remembrance for all those who lost their lives in military service. The most famous Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, United States. It was established in 1921 and holds the remains of an unidentified American soldier from World War I. Later, unknown soldiers from World War II, the Korean War, and initially from the Vietnam War were also interred there, although the remains from Vietnam were later identified and removed. The tomb is guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by specially trained members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as "The Old Guard." The changing of the guard ceremony at the tomb is a solemn and precise ritual that draws many visitors. Similar tombs exist in other countries.
