The 1st Minn was the very first Union volunteer infantry made after the Battle of Fort Sumter. We fought at 1st Battle of Bull Run/Manassas, Ball’s Bluff, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and lastly Gettysburg. At Gettysburg, we were made the most famous, charging into the confederate lines to buy time to get reinforcements. We suffered 82% casualties at Gettysburg. We saved the battle that day, perhaps even the war. July 2nd MG Winfield Scott orders 1stMN to charge against the rebels to buy time for reinforcements to fill in the gap left by General Sickles at Plum Run Winfield Scott “ What regiment is this?” Coville: “ The First Minnesota.” Winfield Scott “Charge those lines.” Coville: “Attention! 1stMN...Forward double-quick, March!” 1 178 men were wounded or killed out of 262 men It was 262 men vs 1200 men, 5 to 1 odds.
