Description
In 1853 following the creation of the Los Alameda City Guards, widespread violence, gambling, and vice, swept the city. The volunteer force was not particularly efficient in handling the epidemic, until six of the city guard officers were hired to serve under the City Marshal. By 1871, the City Guards were reformed into the first paid police force in the city.
