1914-1918 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Russia responded to Austria-Hungary's refusal to heed the Russian Empire's ultimatum by mobilizing its army in defense of Serbia, its ally. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914, Russia began a partial mobilization of its army in response. On July 30, Russia declared a full mobilization, which meant that its entire army was being prepared for war. This move by Russia was seen as a direct challenge to Austria-Hungary, and it prompted Germany to issue an ultimatum to Russia to halt its mobilization. When Russia refused, Germany declared war on Russia on August 1, 1914. This set off a chain reaction of declarations of war, with other countries entering the conflict on either side. In short, Russia's response to Austria-Hungary's refusal to heed its ultimatum was to mobilize its army and prepare for war in defense of its ally, Serbia. This ultimately led to the outbreak of World War I.y.
