Description
Origin: The Tromiphois are not Spartan by birth. They are drawn from perioikoi (free inhabitants of Lacedaemonian territories but not citizens), allied city-states, or even exceptional helots who have proven their loyalty. They are the outsiders who have sworn to fight for the Spartan cause. Status: They exist in a social and military gray area. They are respected for their discipline and commitment but are forever marked as non-citizens. They are "allied cadets," allowed within the fort's walls for training and defense but never fully integrated into the main Spartan homoioi ("equals") ranks. Role: They serve as the vital link between the elite Spartan heavy infantry and the lighter, more numerous skirmishers of the allied forces. They are the disciplined core that can hold a line where raw recruits would break.
