Contrary to its designation, it was the second airborne division established by the British during the war. Established in mid-1943 under the leadership of Major-General Richard N. Gale, the division comprised the 3rd and 5th Parachute Brigades, the Air landing Brigade, and additional support units. While the 6th Airborne Division consisted of multiple brigades, the primary and most prominent was the 3rd Parachute Brigade. This brigade encompassed three key battalions: the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, the 2nd Parachute Battalion, and the 3rd Parachute Battalion.
