The Dutch East India Company is one of the two (the other being the Dutch West India Company) publicly chartered corporations of the Dutch empire. Established in 1602 by the States General of the Netherlands, it soon became the first joint-stock company in the world and autonomously introduced the worlds first ever stock market. The East India Company would be the main driving force behind the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asian spice trade.
