Description
The regiment was raised by Georges De Coppens, with with one company consisting of English-speaking Americans, a second consisting of Louisiana Creoles, and many other soldiers being foreign born Swiss, German, Italian, Spanish, and Irish soldiers. The 1st Louisiana Zouaves first saw action during the Peninsula Campaign, after which they fought in the Seven Days Battles, the Siege of Harpers Ferry, the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam (where De Coppens was killed), the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Siege of Suffolk. The battalion disbanded in December 1864.
