Description
The Toda clan was a samurai family from Mikawa Province, descended from Fujiwara no Sanefusa. They were a prominent fudai daimyō family during the Edo period (1603-1868). The Toda clan held significant territories, including Ōgaki in Gifu Prefecture with an income of 100,000 koku, Utsunomiya in Tochigi Prefecture with 77,000 koku, and Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture with 60,000 koku. Among its most storied members was Toda Yoshichiyo, a skilled samurai born near the end of the Sengoku period at Matsumoto Castle. His father was slain in battle during the tumultuous Sengoku era, and Yoshichiyo was raised by his mother, Toda Naomi, alongside his grandfather, the legendary Toda Yoshinobu.
