Description
The Lordship of Sark and its manor were first granted by Queen Elizabeth I to Helier de Carteret in 1563 as a fiefdom; the House of Carteret would continue to rule Sark until 1720, when it was sold to John Johnson. It would go through many owners until the Ancient House of Rochechouart would buy the fiefdom it in 1898. Being both Lords of Sark and Saint Ouen (though only Sark possessed real feudal rights), they would continue to rule the island fief and its inhabitants with benevolence. Various tenements can be granted by the Seigneur to inhabitants, which will grant them a domicile and optional representation in the Chief Pleas of Sark.
