It was officially established as a separate branch of the U.S. military to provide prompt and sustained offensive and defensive air capabilities in support of the national objectives. This includes maintaining air superiority, conducting strategic airlift and aerial refueling, providing global integrated intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, and developing and maintaining a nuclear deterrent.
