2nd Regiment of Texas Mounted Volunteers #169926035
Description
Organized in April 1847 for a twelve-month term “and during the war,” the 2nd Regiment of Texas Mounted Volunteers was raised as the conflict with Mexico expanded beyond its initial campaign season. Commanded by Colonel John C. Hays, who had previously led the 1st Regiment of Texas Volunteers and continued in service, the regiment drew heavily from seasoned mounted frontiersmen and former ranger elements. Mustered into United States service, the unit participated in sustained operations in northern and central Mexico, providing reconnaissance, screening movements, and rapid-strike capability in support of federal forces. Remaining in the field through the latter phase of the war, the regiment was discharged in May 1848 following the conclusion of hostilities.
