Description
In the 1770s, Hesse, a region in central Germany, was ruled by Landgrave Frederick II of Hesse-Kassel. The region played a significant role in the American Revolution, with thousands of Hessian soldiers hired by Britain to fight against American colonists. Despite the military engagement, Hesse was also experiencing gradual internal reforms inspired by Enlightenment ideas, particularly under Frederick’s leadership, which aimed to improve agriculture, industry, and education. While Hesse-Kassel was a relatively progressive state, it remained largely feudal, with most of its population working as peasants. The region was predominantly Protestant, though it had minority Catholic and Jewish populations. Culturally, it was influenced by the broader European Enlightenment, with an increasing interest in intellectual and social reforms. Overall, the 1770s marked a time of military involvement abroad and political and social change at home.
