The Soviet Airborne Forces were an elite branch of the Soviet Armed Forces, trained for rapid deployment, airborne assault, and deep operations behind enemy lines. Operating throughout the Cold War era, the VDV specialized in parachute and air-landing assaults, seizure of key objectives, and independent operations in hostile territory. Highly mobile and heavily disciplined, they served as the strategic shock force of the Soviet Union.
