Quando Alexandre I subiu ao trono em março de 1801, a Rússia estava em um estado de hostilidade com a maior parte da Europa, embora seus exércitos não estivessem realmente lutando; seu único aliado era seu inimigo tradicional, a Turquia. O novo imperador rapidamente fez as pazes com a França e a Grã-Bretanha e restabeleceu relações normais com a Áustria. Sua esperança de poder se concentrar na reforma interna foi frustrada pela reabertura da guerra com Napoleão em 1805.
