中华人民共和国国防部是国务院组成部门，1954年9月由第一届全国人民代表大会第一次会议决定设立，依据宪法履行国防建设相关职能，接受国务院与中央军事委员会领导，贯彻党指挥枪的根本原则。 国防部主要承担国防建设领域行政事务，负责国防动员、兵役征集、国防教育、边防海防、军队外事、军人权益保障、国防科技与装备建设协调等工作，统一对外代表国家处理军事外交、发布国防权威信息、开展中外军队交流合作，维护国家主权、安全、发展利益。 国防部不行使作战指挥权，全国武装力量由中央军委统一领导指挥。其工作聚焦国防与经济社会发展统筹衔接，推动国防和军队现代化建设，服务国家安全战略全局。 国防部官网权威发布国防政策、军队建设、演训活动、国际军事合作等信息，常态化举行例行记者会，主动回应关切、增信释疑，展现中国军队捍卫和平、维护稳定的坚定决心，为国家长治久安与世界和平稳定提供坚实保障。
