Description
The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway opened in May 1898. It was a 19 mile long narrow gauge line running through North Devon, England. In 1922 the L&B was taken over by the Southern Railway, and closed in September 1935. The Lynton & Barnstaple Trust was formed in 1979 and the Woody Bay secion of the route reopened in 2004. The line was extended in 2007 & plans include to reopen 9 miles of the line to both Lynton (at a new station closer to the town) and to a new station at Wistlandpound Reservoir. The locos were named after rivers in Devon: Yeo, Exe, Taw & Lyn. In 1925, Lew was built for the L&B. When the L&B closed, only Lew escaped scrapping and was shipped to Brazil and vanished. One report says Lew was seen in Brazil in 1939 & sent to Argentina in 1940. In 2010 a replica of Lew, named Lyd was completed in Wales. The L&B is building replicas of Yeo & Lyn. Lyn will be completed in 2014.
