Description
Volunteer military units formed in 1914, when Poland did not exist as an independent state - that's what the Polish Legions were. The Legions fought mainly against Russia alongside Austria-Hungary early in the war, but their ultimate loyalty was to the idea of an independent Poland, not to the Central Powers themselves. They became the nucleus of a future Polish Army and one of the foundations of the reborn Polish state in 1918. Divided into three brigades - the First Brigade, the Second Brigade and the Third Brigade - they became the legends in Polish history, following the motto of "God, Honor, Fatherland".
