Description

The Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, a fragment of ancient Saxony ruled by the House of Welf, lacked a single capital. By the mid-18th century, cultural flourish mixed with financial crises. The warlike Duke Charles William Ferdinand embraced enlightened absolutism, but Prussian drilling replaced liberal ideas. During the Revolutionary Wars, he issued a notorious manifesto against France, was mortally wounded at Auerstedt (1806), and his duchy vanished into the Kingdom of Westphalia. His son, the “Black Duke” Frederick William, raised the Black Legion in mourning uniforms, raiding Germany before fleeing to England. After Napoleon’s first fall, he restored the duchy and built its finest army. When Napoleon escaped Elba, Brunswick fought under Wellington at Waterloo. Leading a charge against Polish lancers near Mont-Saint-Jean, the 43 year old duke was shot dead, becoming the battle’s fiercest martyr. That evening, his black-clad legionnaires recaptured key artillery, sealing the little.
